GirlTip #110: Ask For Academic Support If Necessary

By Rachel Simmons

  • Achievement & Failure

There’s no shame in asking for an extension. Instead of seeing it as a defeat, reframe it: it’s asking for support. And instead of saying, “I’m overwhelmed” or “I just can’t do it,” be precise. If there’s something unusual happening in your life that’s taking you off course, say so (in 1-2 sentences). If you want to share a feeling about it — disappointment or embarrassment about having to ask — that’s okay, too. Give your professor or teacher a chance to connect with your experience, and you, and they’ll likely show more compassion and perspective.
