This Girls Leadership Institute program helps you empower your daughter to make real friends, communicate honestly and directly, and be true to herself. Girls and parents are encouraged to have fun together while learning about friendships, apologies and a healthy approach to conflict. Families learn techniques and establish healthy practices that will serve girls in elementary school and beyond.

Rachel is excited to announce that she is now working with undergraduate students and administrators on leadership development. In her current capacity as consultant to Smith College’s Center for Work and Life, Rachel leads workshops in the following areas:

Leadership for Rebels: A Recipe for Courage and Personal Authority – Participants examine how the pressure young women face to be “Good Girls” – unerringly nice, polite, modest and selfless – limits the development of a set of skills necessary to reach one’s personal and professional potential. In this workshop, participants develop their “inner resume:” skills to help them connect and act on their most important thoughts and feelings; advocate for themselves in their most important relationships; and explore their relationship to apology and blame.

Residence Life Workshops – Professional and student residence life staff identify communication challenges for young women in college housing, apply new communication skills to these conversations, and set goals for effective problem solving.

Athletics – Coaches and team leaders explore communication patterns on women’s sports teams, including whether or not each participant tends to be avoidant, aggressive or assertive in the face of conflict related to her team. Participants learn and practice new communication skills, especially those associated with emotional self-awareness and expression; “owning up” or taking personal responsibility; and assertive self-expression.

Rachel has joined the Advisory Board of the Confidence Coalition. Organized by the Kappa Delta Sorority in the Spring of 2009, the Confidence Coalition mobilizes the many organizations, companies and individuals that promote self-esteem and confidence among girls and women.

By banding together to launch a national media campaign, web site and action projects, the Confidence Coalition brings awareness to the factors influencing the confidence of women and girls. Partner organizations, which include the Girls Leadership Institute, encourage women and girls to stand up to peer pressure and media stereotypes, say no to risky behavior and abusive relationships, and put an end to relational aggression. Rachel is delighted to join forces with this important initiative. To learn more, visit the official website at www.confidencecoalition.org.

Rachel is teaming up with Circle of Respect, the new initiative launched by the National Crime Prevention Council aimed at raising bullying awareness and reducing the occurrence of relational aggression. Circle of Respect strives to create an environment where bullying is unacceptable, and to shift public perception from one that tolerates bullying as a rite of passage to one that sees respect as the norm.

The Circle of Respect Book Club will feature Rachel’s book, Odd Girl Out, for the month of December. Odd Girl Out depicts a hidden culture of girls’ aggression that is as widespread as it is painful. Also in December, Rachel will be featured in Circle of Respect’s author led podcast, which you can listen to here later this month. Rachel and NCPC share the common goal of equipping children, youth, and adults with the tools to prevent bullying and ultimately stop it altogether.

The Circle of Respect initiative will start by addressing both bullying and cyberbullying to fundamentally change the notion that bullying is a rite of passage to one where bullying is unacceptable. The Circle of Respect is a multi-phased initiative that will eventually expand in scope to include harassment, vandalism, theft, alcohol and other drug abuse, date rape, and hate crimes. For more information on the Circle of Respect Book Club, visit http://www.circleofrespect.org/.
