GirlTip #3: Does a Good Friend Play With You Every Day?

By | May 5th, 2012 | 2 comments

In a first grade discussion of what makes a good friend, several girls said, “You play together every day.” Gently discourage the young girl in your life from such assumptions. A friend may not want to play with you today – it may make you sad, but it doesn’t automatically mean she’s being nasty, or that she’s not a friend. Explore constructive ways to deal with a friend who doesn’t want to play.

    Dear Rachel,
Thank you for this. I am struggling with this very issue with my 7 year old. I wonder too if there is any research comparing the socialization issues for girls who come from families with only male siblings (our daughter has two older brothers) and families where there are sisters. Does this make it easier or harder to navigate the world of girls?

    Thank you.

    Naomi
