Perhaps if we're serious about hearing and supporting girls and women, we could start by not calling our children (boy or girl) "whiners" or describing their emotional displays at "tantrums", "throwing a fit", "bratty" etc.

You know what really bothers me? When I am angry or irritable about something, and the person I'm talking to gives me a blank glare (you can see the gears turning in their heads and the questioning eyebrow raise) followed by, "Wait....are you on your period?" Seriously??! Is that even relevant?? That question translates into my head as, "...cause if you are on your period, then your anger and concern is not legitimate, and I can just smile & nod as I wait for the storm to pass."
Yes, I admit, I do get more sensitive during that time of month, but I've been asked this question when it wasn't anywhere near that time of month. The societal message is "If a woman is ever angry or upset, she's just PMSing, so don't worry about it."
