This conversation is great....thanks for writing it. I work at an all girls school where "that's so gay" is said so frequently. After hearing it in the halls for so long, I worked with several juniors to create an activity that we do on a leadership day each year. First, a young woman speaks out on discrimination and witnesses to their own personal experience. They suggested inventing a word that would click with young people to use in place of words that are offensive or discriminatory. Each year our HS juniors collaborate to find a catchy word to encourage their class to use in place of "gay." They work in small groups and then the entire class votes on the word they are going to use instead. It seems to work well as an awareness tool, and allows for necessary back and forth between the students.

[...] There’s a new post up on Rachel Simmons’ blog that has an interview with Ashely Cole – a high school senior from North Carolina who made a PSA regarding derogatory words and teen’s use of homophobic language (such as saying “that’s so gay” in a negative manner). In the interview Cole discusses how she was motivated to make her own video after seeing similar PSAs by Wanda Sykes and Hillary Duff. You can read the interview and view Cole’s video here.
Well done for speaking up and

THINKING BEFORE YOU SPEAK!

Those two are very good things to do.

And I would be careful about using "weird", "stupid" and "lame" as well.

Watching Milk, there was a strong message, that if more people knew who the homosexual people were in their communities, that they would watch what they said and did, and the laws they made.

And I don't know why it's so weak (or considered as weak) to say directly: "I don't like it".
