Rachel Hosts New PBS Show on Girls to Premiere December 30 at 8 pm
On December 30 at 8 pm, I will host “A Girl’s Life,” a new PBS show about girls. The show follows four teens as they face struggles with body image, cyberbullying, violence and education.
Working on this show was a true privilege. The best part, of course, was the people. I got to meet experts I’ve long admired — people like Parry Aftab, who’s leading the fight against cyberbullying, and Jean Kilbourne, who has pioneered the study of women and girls in the media.
And then, the real treat: the girls. Annaluz, who we met at Girls, Inc in Lynn, MA: a feisty basketball player who hides a deep vulnerability about her body. There’s Libby, a recovering popular girl who learned a painful lesson about true friends and the destructive power of cyberbullying. There’s Carla, who shows us shocking video of her brawls with other girls, and whose moving relationship with a mentor police officer is pulling her away from risky choices. Finally, Sonia: the daughter of illegal Mexican immigrants and a hopeful, driven senior at the Young Women’s Leadership School in East Harlem. Will she get into college, and can she afford to go?
Meet these girls and the experts and parents who love them on December 30. The show is sure to air often, so check your local listings if you miss the premiere. You can also stream the program online in January.
Working on “A Girl’s Life” combined all my favorite things: working with girls, learning from experts, and delivering under pressure (of a camera!). My only regret? No blooper reel! To watch a clip, see discussion questions for parents, get a lesson plan for educators, buy the DVD, or find more resources, visit the new page on my website devoted to the show.
A Girl’s Life is a co-production of Powderhouse Productions, Inc., and the Independent Television Service (ITVS), with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and produced in association with Oregon Public Broadcasting.

Rachel, you are like a farmer…OUTSTANDING in your field!! I just watched your special on PBS “A Girl’s Life”. It was just what the doctor ordered. I am the proud, and at times, fairly confused father of two beautiful young ladies, 13 and 11 years old. I was 30 years old when I had my oldest but emotionally I was about 5. The mantra that was instilled in me while in the Army was “lead by example”. Since I have been one of their primary examples of how to deal with life on life’s terms I can’t help feeling, to a certain degree, somewhat responsible for at least some of their own stunted emotions, perspectives and ideas. Your show on PBS and your website information has been inspirational and very informative and I will, from now on, use these resources as well as my own recovery efforts to aid me in my own growth to be the best example for my girls. Thank you so much. Keep keeping it real. Marty
