GirlTip #31: “Haha kind of hate u right now:” R U Playing With Fire Online?
“Haha kind of hate u right now.” “ummmm annoying!
” R U sending mixed messages? Using emoticons that contradict what you say confuse and provoke people. If you’re saying something serious, avoid tacking on the phrases that suggest you don’t mean it: haha, jk, and lol. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. If you don’t, you’re playing with fire, and you may set yourself up for online drama.

i think that the contradictory emoticons/phrases are so the sender can get out of saying the hard thing to say, like “I found that annoying” or “I’m mad @ you”. It’s just so they can say they were kidding, pretend it never happened, and get through a tough situation without even confronting it. I know i’ve done this and all my friends do it too. pretty common.
Yes, I totally agree! Which is why it’s so important to make sure someone is just kidding before responding — and/or to follow up in person if you’re left feeling like they used the emoticon as a way to avoid owning what was really happening.
I think people who do this are LOOKING for online drama, if not outright enjoying it.
